A Month with the iPhone – My Thoughts

After a month of using the iPhone, I’ve had time to reflect on the experience. Coming from years of using Android devices, the switch has been an adjustment, but here are my thoughts.

At the core, both Apple and Samsung achieve the same outcomes—they just take different approaches. Navigating the iPhone felt unfamiliar at first, with small differences in gestures, settings, and app management that made me feel like a beginner again. It wasn’t frustrating, just different. Some things felt intuitive, while others took me a bit longer to figure out.

One feature that really stood out was the iPhone’s approach to privacy. Every time I installed a new app, I was prompted with clear privacy options, giving me control over what data I was sharing. It’s a small but reassuring feature that I don’t recall seeing as prominently on Samsung devices.

Now that I’ve spent a month with it, I feel like my experiment is wrapping up. I’ve proven to myself that I can use the iPhone without issue—it’s just a matter of getting comfortable with the Apple way of doing things. Will I stick with it long-term? Time will tell!

Phone Update #1 end of week 1

I plan to post every week to share my progress with the iPhone. This week, I only wanted to throw the phone in the bin four times—an improvement from last week!

Here are the challenges I’ve faced so far:

  • iTunes/iCloud Syncing: I’m struggling to understand how iTunes and iCloud work together for syncing data. I usually listen to iHeart Radio for my favorite stations, especially in the car. I also keep a music folder on my phone for when I’m out of 4G range. I imported all my songs into iTunes, but only some synced to the phone, and I can’t figure out why.
  • File Management: On my Samsung, I had a folder that synced with my desktop PC. I could easily copy files like photos of my driver’s license to have them handy, even without coverage. With the iPhone, I’ve figured out how to sync a folder by adding it to iCloud, but I still need to research how to create a shortcut for easier access.
  • Apple Pay vs. Google Wallet: I wasn’t a huge fan of Google Wallet, but it let me keep all my loyalty cards and credit cards in one place. Apple Pay handles credit cards well, but I can’t add loyalty cards like Flybuys or my Ikea Family card.

Now, for the positives:

  • Battery Life: It’s incredible—easily lasts two days.
  • Bluetooth: Works very well, no complaints.
  • Apple CarPlay: It’s excellent and a joy to use.

I’m still navigating the learning curve, but each week feels a bit less frustrating. Let’s see how things go from here!

Project iPhone!

After 15 years with Android, I’ve decided to try my hand at Apple. On Christmas Eve, I purchased an iPhone 16+ 256GB in Black, aiming to get as close as possible to my Samsung S24+.

I still remember my first Android phone—a HTC. It didn’t do much, but it had a big screen, a stark contrast to my trusty Nokia at the time.

My whole family has been Apple fans from the start—iPhones, iPads, MacBooks—you name it. I’ve always resisted the pressure, often saying, “Apple doesn’t play well with others.”

First impressions of the iPhone? It’s nice. The big screen and great battery life are definite pluses. But the ease and flexibility I enjoyed with Android aren’t there. For instance, custom ringtones were simple on Android: download a song, move it to the ringtone folder, and voilà. On the iPhone, it’s so complicated that Apple even wrote a tech note on how to do it (https://support.apple.com/en-au/120692).

I also used the Android-to-Apple migration tool, which worked… sort of. It didn’t tell me which apps didn’t transfer. Some banking apps made it to the iPhone, but not all. Perplexing, to say the least.

It’s now Day 4. My plan is to stick with the iPhone until Christmas Day 2025 and then decide whether to continue or switch to Pixel. Using it feels like driving a left-hand-drive car in a right-hand-drive country. Some things are intuitive, while others require extra thought. Right now, I’m in that early frustration phase, but hopefully, it gets easier with time.

Retrenchment

Being overlooked and discarded is a tough blow, especially just before Christmas. It feels like an added insult during what’s supposed to be a time of joy and reflection. It’s been years since I last faced retrenchment, and I’d almost forgotten how gut-wrenching it can be.

Sales is a tough gig. When things are going well, it’s a shared celebration. Everyone wants to be part of the success, riding the wave of achievements. But when sales dip, it’s a different story—you’re left standing alone, bearing the weight of the struggle.

It’s not just about losing a role; it’s about losing a part of your identity. Salespeople invest so much of themselves into their work—the long hours, the relationships built, the strategies crafted. To have it all dismissed can feel deeply personal.

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that resilience matters. Sales may be harsh, but it’s also a space where comebacks are possible. It’s a reminder to keep pushing forward, even when the odds feel stacked against you.

Here’s to finding strength and new opportunities, even in the face of setbacks.

AI – the new craze

I’ve witnessed entire industries emerge seemingly overnight. Working in IT, I’ve seen these waves come and go, each promising to reshape the future.

Remember when Virtualization was the game-changer? Then came Cloud Computing, followed by the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, and Big Data. Each of these buzzwords brought new opportunities—and new challenges. The list keeps growing as technology evolves, introducing more trends to capture the market’s attention.

These topics don’t just drive innovation; they fuel the next wave of sales. Companies latch onto them as the latest solutions to sell. Take Microsoft’s promotion of Co-pilot on their new laptops. They’re encouraging users to trade in their old devices, emphasizing productivity and AI-powered enhancements. It’s a smart move—pushing the narrative of staying ahead while generating $$$ for IT manufacturers.

And so, the cycle continues. The tech world keeps spinning, driven by the latest innovations, while businesses adapt to keep up or risk being left behind.

Brands

As time goes on, I’m realizing that I’m no longer in my 30s, and I’m definitely getting set in my ways. But when it comes to certain brands, I’m okay with that. Here are some of my go-to choices:

Sidchrome – In my opinion, they still make the best tools for the workshop. I have sockets and spanners that are over 40 years old, and I absolutely love them. I’ve recently started a project to clean up and restore some of these tools to their former glory.

Blundstone Boots – I went through four pairs of Blundstones in the late ’90s and early 2000s. I had a pair from 2016 that I rarely wore, and when I recently put them on, the soles cracked and looked terrible. I sent a polite email to Blundstone, explaining that I had barely worn them and was disappointed they fell apart. To my surprise, they replaced them! I was blown away. Now, I wear the replacements once a week. The only thing that could make them better is if they were made in Australia.

Jeans – This one’s tricky. It’s either RM Williams (which I find quite pricey) or Levi’s. As a kid, I always wanted Levi’s because all the cool kids had them, but instead, I had the K-Mart knock-offs. Nowadays, my wardrobe consists only of Levi’s and RM Williams jeans, along with a few pairs of Thomas Cook moleskin pants, which are incredibly comfortable.

Shirts – I only buy RM Williams or Bisley shirts. Sure, there are cheaper options out there, but I’ve found that good-quality shirts last three to four times longer than the cheap ones.

Quick Update

My, how time flies! I have been busy using the Marie Kondo Method to reduce my clutter.

“Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.”

So, I have been reducing my stuff. When was the last time I used the two beach fishing rods? Actually, I never used them. I dusted them for 10 years, and they just sat in the back of the garage, taking up space both physically and mentally. That’s just one example.

I’m also working on reducing my clothes. I still have a Hugo Boss suit. It was on my dream list (I guess now they’re called bucket lists). So, lots of T-shirts have gone, and decisions have been made. As for jeans, I always wanted to wear Levi’s when I was a kid, but my parents wouldn’t buy them for me. So, I got rid of all my jeans and replaced them with one pair of Levi’s and one pair of RM Williams. If I use the $1 rule, I think the cost of my jeans is around 20 cents per wear. The same goes for shoes. I have Crocs, Blundstone Boots, and RM Williams boots (I wrote the purchase date in the boots – over 10 years ago!).

Navigating Recycling Challenges for Insulin Pens and Needles in Australia

Introduction

In Australia, the increasing prevalence of diabetes has led to a rise in the use of insulin pens and needles. However, recycling these essential diabetes supplies poses a unique set of challenges. This blog post sheds light on the difficulties of recycling insulin pens, needles, and similar items in Australia and explores potential solutions.

Recycling Hurdles

  1. Medical Waste Regulations: Insulin pens and needles are classified as medical waste due to potential contamination with bodily fluids. This categorization subjects them to stringent regulations for proper disposal and recycling, making the process more complex.
  2. Contamination Risks: Residual insulin and blood on pens and needles can pose contamination risks during the recycling process. Even a small amount of contamination can render entire batches unusable, increasing the difficulty of recycling.
  3. Lack of Dedicated Infrastructure: Recycling facilities in Australia may lack the necessary equipment and expertise to handle medical waste, including insulin pens and needles. The absence of specialized recycling infrastructure contributes to the challenges of recycling these items.
  4. Safe Disposal of Sharps: Proper disposal of needles is crucial to prevent injuries to waste collectors and recycling workers. However, ensuring safe disposal methods for used needles outside healthcare settings remains a challenge.

Potential Solutions

  1. Public Education: Raising awareness among diabetes patients and healthcare professionals about the proper disposal and recycling of insulin pens and needles is vital. Educating them about the potential environmental and health risks of improper disposal can drive better waste management practices.
  2. Dedicated Collection Programs: Implementing collection programs at pharmacies, clinics, and community centers specifically for insulin pens and needles can improve waste separation. These programs would ensure that these items are directed to the right facilities for recycling.
  3. Recycling Infrastructure Investment: Collaboration between the government, healthcare institutions, and waste management companies is essential to invest in specialized recycling infrastructure. This would enable the safe and efficient recycling of medical waste.
  4. Sharps Disposal Options: Providing accessible sharps disposal options for individuals outside healthcare facilities can minimize the risk of injuries and improve the safe disposal of needles.

Conclusion

Recycling insulin pens, needles, and similar diabetes supplies in Australia comes with a unique set of obstacles due to medical waste regulations, contamination concerns, and limited recycling infrastructure. However, addressing these challenges is crucial for both environmental sustainability and public safety. By focusing on education, dedicated collection programs, infrastructure investment, and safe disposal solutions, Australia can work towards more effective recycling of insulin pens and needles while ensuring the well-being of its population and the environment.

Making Things Easier for a 60-Year-Old Man

Simplifying Life:

Introduction:

Welcome to the world of 60, where life takes on a whole new meaning. It’s time to simplify things, reduce stress, and embrace a more relaxed and fulfilling lifestyle. In this blog post, I’ll share some practical tips and strategies to help you simplify your life, declutter your mind, and find greater contentment.

  1. Streamline Your Finances:

Managing finances can be overwhelming at any age, but it becomes even more crucial as you reach 60. Take a close look at your expenses, consider consolidating accounts, and automate bill payments to make things easier. If downsizing aligns with your financial goals, it might be worth exploring. Seek advice from financial professionals to optimize your retirement savings and investments, ensuring a secure financial future.

  1. Declutter Your Living Space:

A cluttered living space leads to mental clutter. Start decluttering one room at a time. Donate or sell items that no longer serve a purpose, and keep only those possessions that hold sentimental or practical value. Create an organized system for your belongings to make it easier to find what you need and maintain a clean and peaceful living environment.

  1. Prioritize Health and Well-being:

Taking care of your health becomes increasingly important at 60. Simplify your approach by adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and scheduling routine check-ups with your healthcare provider. Focus on activities that bring you joy and promote relaxation, such as walking, yoga, or meditation. Remember, a good night’s sleep is vital for overall well-being.

  1. Embrace Technology:

While technology may seem daunting, it can simplify various aspects of life. Learn to use smartphones, tablets, and computers to stay connected with loved ones, manage appointments, and access useful applications that make everyday tasks easier. Embracing technology opens up a world of opportunities and convenience, enhancing your daily life.

  1. Cultivate Strong Relationships:

Simplifying life involves nurturing meaningful relationships. Prioritize spending quality time with family and friends, engaging in activities that deepen connections and create lasting memories. Surround yourself with positive influences and let go of toxic relationships that drain your energy. Remember, a rich and fulfilling life is built on strong and genuine connections with others.

  1. Find Purpose and Passion:

Retirement is an ideal time to explore new passions and interests. Identify activities or hobbies that bring you joy and a sense of purpose. It could be anything from pursuing creative endeavors like painting or writing, volunteering, or taking up a new hobby or sport. Engaging in activities you love not only brings fulfillment but also simplifies your life by focusing on what truly matters to you.

  1. Simplify Your Digital Life:

Digital clutter can overwhelm and complicate your online experience. Organize your digital files, delete unnecessary emails, and unsubscribe from newsletters and notifications that no longer serve you. Keep your digital devices organized and secure with strong passwords and regular updates. By simplifying your digital life, you can enhance productivity and reduce distractions.

Conclusion:

Simplifying life at 60 is about embracing an intentional, focused, and fulfilling lifestyle. By streamlining finances, decluttering living spaces, prioritizing health, embracing technology, nurturing relationships, finding purpose, and simplifying your digital life, you can pave the way for a more content and peaceful existence. Remember, simplification is a continuous process, so enjoy the journey and revel in the newfound clarity and satisfaction it brings.

Home Automation

I have found a new passion.  Home Automation.  So I started with a smart bulb in my bedroom, then one in the walk-in robe.   Then I got some smart switches…  and it just grew from there.

I have 7 light switches replaced with Sonoff Mini’s, I have 4 Alexa units, around the house. Working on Automations now.  So if you turn the exhaust fan on in the ensuite it runs for 15 minutes and then turns off.  My goal is to replace all light switches with Sonoff Mini’s.  ( they cost $8 AUD and a smart switch from Brilliant cost $60)

Mobile Phones….

Here in Australia we pay a lot of money for our mobile phones… and excess data charges. I can remember the days when user were charged for every phone calls and SMS’s. All of this has gone now…. but handsets are so very expensive. Nokias used to be around $300. Now a Samsung S9 or iPhone will set you back over $1000 and the cost is just going up.. Do we really need the best & latest phones…. I’m really not sure.

But its on a Plan…. so why should I care? Well when that contract runs out, usually 2 years, you go back and do it all again. What happens if your employment changes and you can’t bill your boss for your calls…

I have gone from a Samsung S8+. Down to a Samsung A5, I was given the A5 and I quite like it. Gone is Bixby.. not a loss, I don’t really notice the difference. It works with all my apps. It doesn’t seem much slower that the S8+. which makes me think, I will go prepaid and buy my handsets outright in the future. How would this work?

I also wonder about the Apple platform…. how would the SE type of phones go? Any feedback here… I don’t think it will be too far away where phones are $2000 each…

What do you think?

Money… negotiate to keep more

I have been reading a lot of money books and blogs recently.   I love the Barefoot Investor Scott has a very different approch to investing..  also  Mr. Money Mustache again a different view that the traditional investment concepts.

Using their ideas, I have been working to reduce my expenses.  1st to go…   NBN (internet) and Foxtel, both combine were almost $200 per month, and seperate bills at different times throughout the month.  Now, Telstra $129 per month gives me exaclty the same services on 1 bill.  Upfront $99 fee to swap.  I will see if I can sell my modem/router and reduce that $99 upfront cost.

I have a few other ideas on how to reduce expenses..I will keep you in the loop!

Have a great day

Whistleblower?

Our Australian culture does not really support Whistleblowers.     Nice quote here… The former NSW Police Commissioner Tony Lauer summed up official government and police attitudes as: “Nobody in Australia much likes whistleblowers, particularly in an organization like the police or the government.”  REF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblower#Australia

Having been one, around church/christian school misconduct,  it takes quite a toll on the reporter.  Most often the perpetrator(s) have the position of strength and can use all they organisations assets to crush the reporter, just look at the current Royal Commission into Banking, banks abusing the “little people” with no regard for the consequences.

So what do we do?   Well my advise is to run not walk away from the situation as fast as possible,  you risk a great deal for little return and nobody thanks you.  Its very sad that we have come to this point, but this is where society is at.

The “coalition”  fought very hard not to have the Royal Commission into Banking, voting it down many times,  until the groundswell within it own party could not be silenced.  see the result,  AMP in dire straights, Commonwealth Bank’s reputation very tarnished.

All it needs for evil to flourish is for people of good will to do nothing.– Edmund Burke

Sorry if this appear to be a ramble,  just my 10c worth!

$5,000 for a hours work?

We have all seen those Citibank ads that show the beautiful people enjoying life with credit cards, implying that swap you credit card for a CitiBank card, transfer the balance and life is great.  Finder.com.au has a similar story.

So I tried it,   Finder.com.au.   Did an application directly from their website for a Bank,  lets call that bank W.  So here is what happened.   Completed the app in 10 minutes,  got an email to say I was pre-approved and a list of documents required to complete the deal.

Downloaded the statements, send to W, and waited, called them, got a call centre that didn’t sound Australian, but thats ok. It seamed like we were working from 2 different application forms.  Here’s an example. (Him)  Where is the rent from you investment property on your statement.  I can only see 1 payment.  (Me) Correct, look at the last business day of the month,  Deposit from L J Hooker.  (Him) Where are the other weeks payments ( Me) the managing agent only pays me once a month.    This went on for a while.   I think in total I made 4 calls, send the same documents twice. We got their in the end.

So whats the outcome look like.  Well the old Credit Card was not paid off in full, I know, very bad and the interest was 21%.  so about 200-300 per month in interest.  The new card has 2 years 0% interest on balance transfers.  so in theory thats about 5k saved.

We shall see if works out.  My kids pay board to the credit card account so they are reducing the amount for me.

Update ##

So the new Credit Card provider only allows 80% of the debt to be rolled over and they have no control over the closing of the old credit card.  So it would be possible ( but very irresponsible) to not reduce the limit on the 1st card, it would be so easy to into further difficulty.

Crazy Australian Politics

The Australian political scene is negative and toxic.  I usually keep my political comments to myself as everyone has an opinion and some can be very forceful in proving their point.

But 2 issues have really pissed me off ( well possibly 3)

  1. Barnaby Joyce – personally I don’t really care if he cheated/did not cheat on his wife. The news cycle provided a number of other issues around this. They remain unanswered.

What was the cost for the by-election?  How can an incumbent MP,  be able to stand again, when the reason for the by-election is they were ineligible the first time around.  This is like lying on your resume, getting caught out and keeping the job.  That’s not how it works in the real world.

Accommodation free from a Mate?  Sound really helpful is a stressful time, but he happens to be a property developer.  Is this a conflict?   we don’t know.  We will probably never know.  But it doesn’t look right.  Plus the guy earns $400K plus a year and could not afford to rent a 1 bedder in Armidale?  His “trade” before becoming a MP,  Accountant.  They know how to manage money or at least should.

The employment of said girlfriend,  3 jobs in MP’s offices.  Is this above board?  Was this the best use of taxpayers money, or was it a jobs for mates?  We will never know.

Use of Expenses, did he really need to spend 50 days in Canberra when parliament was not sitting.  And that charter flight at a cost to taxpayers of reportedly over $3k.  This seems to be excessive to me.  Did you know the freedom of Information process won’t answer these questions.  We are to take a MP’s word on it was for “business”  a FOI request can take up to 6 months to be complied with and it can be redacted, (Its a cool word http://www.dictionary.com/browse/redacted)  so they can blank out anything incriminating. I wonder if any MP would charter a flight if they had to pay for it out of their income.

  2. Michaelia Cash and the Union Raid Tip off,  something stinks here,  but again we will never know.  Staff have been moved, data apparently lost and she just rants.  The public, (wake up MP’s we pay your wages)  don’t like being treated as fools. “public interest immunity” is the verbal version of redacting.   I don’t have to tell as it might embarrass me or the government.  Stack the committee so the government wins any challenge.  Who can forget the RANT.  Here if you missed it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PofU79Z1qAs
  3.  Don’t get me started on the Same Sex Debacle.

To all MP’s, we expect better behaviour from our elected officials.  We expect that what is in the best interest of their constituents is how our MP’s should vote. Not part lines, not what the PM says.  What do the people who elected you want? it would be very interesting to compare how the electorates votes on the SSM Vote and how the MP’s in those seats voted.   I doubt that the data would be available to me the average Joe Public.

Very sad my hobbies went away. I will be revisiting them this year and joining Toastmasters.

I do a fair about of speaking to groups for my work. ( IT Sales)  and I never get feedback on how I’m doing.  I think I could do better so lets see what Toastmasters can do for me.

Systems… everyone needs systems

We live in a regimented world.    Most things work on a schedule or a system.  Public transport, shopping, phones etc.

How do you hack them to get the most out of your day.

Here is a few of mine:

I fly very frequently for my work. I always choose the same seat.  Exit row, Isle.  Sometimes its slightly different due to the plane, but it is usually row 13 & 14.  I love the extra leg room and it just makes it a little easier to travel. If you sit on the isle seat, there is a button under the armrest that will allow you to put the armrest up, really handy when getting up to exit the plane.

I use a parking service, they run me to the airport and park my car. I call them when I return, they pick me up. Same price as public parking at the airport.

Uber is my transport, always.  I love that I can get in a car and never hand over my credit card.  I get receipts emailed to me so expenses are easy and you never have to hand over a credit card.

I use an Ikea cube for all my toiletries at home, then I just put it in a zipper bag and take it on my travels, this takes seconds to do.

State of the Nation called Crocombe

Wow. I cannot believe it has been 3 months since my last post.

Time does fly..

So here is a quick update on the Nation of Crocombe

1. Cloud Salesguy – classic fail. I have gone back to my “old ways”  selling for a IT distributor.  I just could not get my head around selling the “cloud”   i am a believer but it is a very difficult sales process. PS.  No Mac product in my life!

2. Schooling – we have moved the kids back to a local private school.  7 years of driving the kids to and from school took it’s toll.  We now have 1.5 hours more a day and no big fuel/ car maintenance bill.  Still early days but interested to see how the bank balance is effected. 3 Kids get MacBook Air’s 8-(

3. Phones – why are there so few phone makers that have a dual SIM phone?  I have decided to never surrender my personal number,  after a few jobs with a company provided phone and moving numbers etc.    You never tell everyone and it’s usually an important one that you miss.  Like the Doctor or Dentist!  So I now have a dual Sim Android phone and I love it.

4.  Debt Reduction – I had a pretty large tax bill – that I have been paying off every week for the last 3 years and it is now down to not much, it should be paid out completely in the next 2 months.  Disappointed that it got to the size it did, but proud to have paid it down to almost nothing.

Quick money update

I been reading a lot about the Debt Reduction – Snowball Effect  and it really works.  I have reduced a number of debts then take the weekly amount saved and apply it to the next debt.

Dave Ramsay is the guru of this…    well worth a read.

On my way to being debt free….

Transport – how to flush money down the drain.

So we have 3 cars,  a bus, a 4wd and a Toyota Echo, the MB Bus hasn’t been driven for months,  registration and insurances cost $200 a month.  Over the weekend I devised a new plan.  Sell the MB Bus, sell the Pajero 4wd and buy a Tarago. Saving cash and sanity….

So that’s the journey I am embarking on…

PS: My son just crashed his car so we all 3 are in use now…..

Windows Mac Battle

Well another week as rolled by,  political turmoil here in Australia, no changes there.  I started a new job selling cloud computing, and horror, they gave me a iPhone and a Mac Book Pro.    I send a photo to my wife of my new laptop boxed on my desk and she just laughed and laughed.

2013-02-04 10.46.09

So I have been using the thing for a few weeks and it’s ok.   Don’t flood me with comments about how to use the features but I find 2 thinks really annoying.

1. no 2 button mouse, Yes I know hold down a key on the keyboard and it works.
2. no ALT key, realy the OPTION key should be the ALT key…  not Command C is copy…

The display is amazing…  the brushed aluminum case is sexy, I know why Apple is a winner, it looks great.  I will continue to use it,  I have windows running on it as well,  – funny you give a guy a Mac but some business apps run only under windows.

Stay tuned!

The gambler?

Every one knows the song by Kenny Rogers. It is a classic. But is it about cards or life, I think both, you need to understand your surroundings and who the players are to make a good call. Everyone has a tell. For example politicians don’t often answer a question, they fluff around in pomp and ceremony but never really answer which shows they don’t know the answer or they don’t like the answer Reminds me of a joke…… How do you know a politician is lying? His lips are moving!

I am writing about money as well!

I have no formal finance training but 30 years of working and the “school of hard knocks”. I am wanting to write about how to be a better manager of my funds. Sometime cheap is expensive and vica-versa. I will be sharing some of my life experiences here…

backup, what backup?

I have a what I thought a pretty good backup plan. I use Crashplan ( free and highly recommended) www.crashplan.com to backup my files to an external drive. This works well and I occasionally test the backup by restoring individual files picked randomly and opening them.. I also use a copy program that copies all my working files ( My documents folder) to another external drive. This copy program runs everyday at 7am, it generates a log file and emails it. The email subject is (failed) if it doesn’t work, so I assume that it is fine until I see error email.

I was looking for a file copy program for a customer and came across Microsoft SyncToy, I tested it and it’s pretty good, but it reported a few thousand files that we newer on my computer than on my external drive. I thought buggy Microsoft program and promptly forgot it.

Boredom snuck in the other night, nothing on TV, Foxtel cancelled so no 200 channels of Trash, I started to do some routine IT maintenance. Checked the emailed Logs of the copy program and it reports everything fine, no files copied.

Hmm Interesting, check the logs a few days earlier, the same result, check back a month, the same result. What’s going on.. I made a new file in the my documents folder and then ran the file copy program, reported success, but the new file was not on the external drive?

Went to my Tech toolkit. Karen’s Replicator. www.karenware.com  this program works great and has saved my butt a number of times. I ran that and “Karen” discovered a few thousand files NOT copied.  Dump copy program and use Karen’s Replicator, System back to copying and backup tested and passed.

People ask me about backups every now and then, I ask them a few questions. What is the threat you are protecting against? How old is your computer? The threat is usually computer failure. That’s an easy one. Buy a big drive and use Crashplan. Test once a month and be vigilant to any messages you get from Crashplan. If theft is the concern, a big drive and use Crashplan and have it backup to the cloud, or another drive that you lock up somewhere or take off site.

Why do I use a copy drive as well? Added security, photography is my addiction and I have thousands of images and adding to them all the time. The external drive is a quick and easy way to have an exact copy of a file. VERY occasionally I have damaged the original image and then grab the additional copy to replace it.

What is the moral of the story? You are wasting your time unless you test backups and file copies regularly.

Email me with your backup strategy.  mc@thin.com.au  I would love to see what other people do!

found this cool website

Have a look at ifttt.com.  You can script an amazing number of things without being a techie. Very clever.

When the weight of the world get you down..

Sometimes life can get you down, harsh things are said that become difficult to take back…

Photography has become an escape from the stress of life for me… I don’t tend to get messages or calls at 5am.. it’s just me and the beautiful view… mostly seashore..  I really enjoy the peace I get from a sunrise photo shoot.  ( and it doesn’t really matter if I get a good sunrise or not)

I went out to Newcastle baths ( 1 1/4 hours from my place) last week,  I got this shot

2011-12-18 Newcastle Baths Sunrise

What a glorious morning that was, the best sunrise of the year.

If you look closely you can see my shadow in the bottom left hand corner.

The wave after this one completely swamped me.  I saw it coming, was on slippery concrete so I could not run,  I grabbed the camera and turned around, my back took the full brunt of the wave.

It was great fun!  Thats how you know you are alive…

Walking Day 1

I felt a bit like this…. but you gotta start somewhere!

Have a great day!

Big Challenge

I have been wanting to find a way to grow my photography and stretch me as a photographer.

I have been playing with an ebook of my images with quotes but that didn’t quite work as I expected.  Then I thought of a calendar.   Easy, 13 images, print the thing and all done. Somehow that is not enough of a challenge so I have not progressed it too far. (something about motivation there)

So now my plan is to print a 8 x 8″ book with 40 images by Christmas 2011.  They say write down your goals,  well it’s very public now!  I will keep you informed of my progress!

Rain, Rain go away!

School holidays here,  and once again it rained,  not many successful sunrises. The kids were going a little crazy being cooped up in the house so I decided to take some of them to Somersby Falls for an outing.   If you live around Sydney, this is a great spot to see the splendor of nature.

The waterfalls were the biggest I have ever seen them.. I guess that’s what you get for 4 days rain.

Now it’s funny, not so funny then, I keep advising the kids to be careful as the rocks were very slippery,  they never fell over but I did  😎

Here is a shot of the day.

Practice makes perfect…..

2011-09-18 Newcastle Lighthouse 046

I had a great night out with my friends from Flickr, Newcastle Sundance.

What a diverse group of people, old, young and in between.  Most brands were there, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, even a Mamiya and a few point and shoots.

We spoke of  cameras, setups and photo ideas.  There was great comaradarie, there was great teaching and knowledge shared…

This image was shot was a very long exposure to try and get a light stream.. I love the result.

2011-09-11 Treasure Hunt 119

I went on a photography Treasure Hunt on Sunday, had the most amazing time with a great group of friends.   You know how a treasure hunt works.  Get a list of things to find and go! Action was one of the topics on the list.

Well this was my action shot,  a 10MM wide angle lens made me very close to the train.  I was about 2 feet away,  the noise, the vacuum I felt gently sucked towards the train… but want a shot…  I really liked the action and the excitement…..

Kodachrome

Watched a Nat Geo program on the last roll of Kodachrome film shot in the world.

I have shot with this film, the color is amazing and after reading the wikipedia I understand why it was expensive to buy and process.. but true rich color, like nothing else on the market.

I have found a supply of Fuji film  not the same but close….  I will drag out the Nikon Film camera and shoot a roll or three!  Just to celbrate the old technology.

Here is notes from Wikipedia…

During its heyday, many Kodak and independent laboratories processed Kodachrome; by 2010, one Kodak certified facility remained: Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas.[5] On 14 July 2010 it was announced[6] that the last roll of Kodachrome to be manufactured was developed by Dwayne’s for photographer Steve McCurry on assignment for National Geographic. The 36 slides will be permanently housed at the Eastman House in Rochester, NY[6] and most of the pictures have been published on the Internet by Vanity Fair magazine.

Dwaynes Photo announced it would cease Kodachrome processing on 30 December 2010.[7] However, the company received such a large quantity of film during December 2010 that processing continued until 18 January 2011.[8]

Crap Sandwich

I hate dealing with people who do a crap sandwich on you.

for example:

Hi Mike,  just wanted you to know you are doing a great job and we really apreciate blah blah blah.  (one slice of bread)  We just need you to get more sales as you are not reaching your figures this month or infact this quarter. (crap filling)  We think you have a great futrue here and were doing great ( one slice of bread)  .   you just got a crap sandwich. All you remember is the filling.

Don’t sugar coat it tell it as it is…..  much better for everyone.

Have you noticed the telemarketers have a simalar script, ” how was your day? tell a bad thing that this charity fixes and ask for money”

Well thats my rant for the day!

Panoramas

I just love panoramas, they are easy to do,  and have a surreal look to them!

This is a pano of “Tin City” a famous spot on the long Stockton Beach just north of Newcastle.

Take a number of shots  with a 40% overlap, have the camera vertical and shoot away. I usually use 4 or 5 images to make the pano ( pano is the tech term in the photography trade) ,  you can use Photoshop or other photo editing software to pull it all together. Keep the focal length of the lens the same,  wide angle lenses give a very distinct curve in the image.  experiment, photography is to be enjoyed!

You cannot make up for bad composition but the images are just wonderful…   Warning – Pano’s with waves in them are very difficult to get the waves to blend together.  They can look silly.

A lesson in customer service

I went to Bunnings yesterday (the wallmart of hardware)  to buy a sensor light, I was in a hurry  and got the wrong one.  Today I returned it.  At the returns counter, I spoke to Amy and she started the refund process, another staff member came past and Amy asked her a question, they then had a great converstaion about work rosters and boyfriends,  I did not exist.

When the refund process finished, Amy wished me a “nice day”….. it felt fake because she didn’t pay me any attention during the completing of the refund.

I just wonder how often I have done a similar thing without being aware.   A customer should have our complete attention.

Maybe this was karma for missing church!

SpringPad

SpringPad

This is an amazing product, I have used it for around 3 months, i just gets better.

Springpad gives you a place to quickly and easily save anything you want to remember. Take a note, create a task, scan a product barcode and look up the book your friend mentioned. The best part is that no matter where you are, Springpad is there with you to make sure you don’t forget something worth remembering. Just think it and Spring it, and it’ll be there for you when you need it.

It’s amazing, keeps all my information, easily and securely. It is my primary note taking tool and I use it all the time. On my HTC Desire and Notebook….   I am sold.. and it’s free!

Email

I get a lot of emails, I used to auto sort them into folders, but I could not keep up with the reading of them.

Here is what I did:

Make a follow-up folder, action folder and file folder.

look at your inbox and then deal with the email.  Move to the folders  and then schedule a time to action them. Delete them if you don’t need to do action them.

I also have some auto file rules –  I don’t need to read my monthly bank statements but I need them sometimes so I have an inbound rule to file them.

unsubscribe to everything I did not read,  remember when you purchased the HP printer and you registered online, that put you on a mailing list.  unsubscribe to that type of thing.  That cut down my email by 50%

Anything you like to read – if it is a newsletter or blog, see if they have a RRS feed and subscribe to it. That way with a smart phone you can read them when you get time.. on the train, when waiting for a meeting etc..

Feedback is alway appreciated, how do you deal with email?

Simple Accounts

I used to chase the “best” deal, but I have found that administering all the accounts is a nightmare.  So my beloved had a mobile on one supplier, I had another, our home phone was with another.  3 bills, 3 direct debits or 3 credit card debts.   Don’t get me started on internet access,  1 account for adsl, different supplier for 3g… where does it stop.

2 cars, that’s 3 insurance options for each.

Now, all phones with one supplier who has my 3G service as well and as soon as my ADSL is off contract, that goes on the one bill.  Might cost a little more, but saves heaps of time and effort.

Now the push to get all the insurances with the same company!

What WWE has taught me about life

Here are some things I have seen that apply to life.

Don’t take the applause before the fight is finished.
Often one wrestler will be winning and as his opponent is down on the mat, he runs around as though he has won…  about 90% of the time ultimately he looses…
Lesson: Don’t take you eye off the ball untill the job is done.  That’s the difference between winning and not

The lead changes during an ad break.
When they break to an advert, the winner changes,  I don’t know why but this is true about 80% of the time.
Lesson: The outcome can change very quickly, keep focused on your goal.

The underdog often wins.
When you see Rey going against a much bigger opponent,  he takes a beating but usually wins.  The bigger opponent gets cocky and Rey punishes him and wins..
Lesson:
Don’t let the apparent size of the issue or situation put you off, work towards victory and you can achieve it.

Its Entertainment.
Watch, get involved, but don’t take it too seriously…  no wwe tattoos here.
Lesson:
Not wanting to make light of people’s situations,  there are not many things that are life changing or life threatening.  Overcome the problem and move onwards.

Feedback is alway good, tell me what you think!

Goodbye Foxtel

When we first got Foxtel, the free to air channels gave us only 4 options.  Now there are many many more,  money is tight so I called Foxtel to reduce the channels we had.

They told me the dumbest thing I have heard for a long time…   you cannot make any changes to your account untill you are up to date…  how dumb is that.  So I cannot afford your service, but unless I am current I can’t reduce my channels.

Well good bye…   back to Free to Air.

We will see how that goes. With almost 16 Free to Air Channels  – some not on Foxtel – we will be fine.

I wanted to watch the Shanghai GP on Sunday afternoon,  V8 Supercars from NZ and then the F1 would have been a great day of revs and fumes… but not to be..  if you wanted to watch it live you could not see it on Foxtel and as my only TV connection is with Foxtel I could not get the free to air channel that showed it live.

Mark Webber stormed from 18th to 3rd,  that would have been great to see LIVE not at 11pm.

Enough said.

Get simple – my first blog

Well, here is a start, I have a complex life that takes too much time to look after,  I am a great generalist but not really good at anything specific.  I want to become passionate about things and that means reducing the clutter in my life.   2 Cars, 8 kids, bank loans, credit cards, share trading, fx trading, 4 email accounts and the list goes on.. there must be a simpler way!

Money is the easy way to start.  Sell stuff I haven’t used in 12 months, close accounts I haven’t used in 12 months…….

I called my FX broker today and closed that account,  the balance was small, but one less thing to account for….
