Two years ago, my setup was very much Windows and Android focused — I had a Windows laptop, a desktop PC, a Lenovo tablet, and a Samsung S24+.
That all changed at Christmas 2024 when I purchased an iPhone 16+. I’ve now been using it for about a year. I’ve written a few posts about the experience, but overall the transition has been pretty straightforward.
In October last year, I bought an iPad. After using it for a while, I realised I probably should have gone with the iPad Mini instead — so I did exactly that. I love the form factor, and it works perfectly for what I need.
Fast forward to January this year, and I purchased a MacBook Air. I absolutely love the hardware. It makes you wonder why other manufacturers can’t produce something that feels this refined and functional. It just works.
There were a couple of things that took some getting used to. The first is that the application control bar sits at the top of the screen, not within each app window. The second is that closing an app window doesn’t actually quit the application.
The other adjustment has been keyboard mapping, especially when using a Windows keyboard. In the Mac world, the Command key (the equivalent of the Windows key) handles most of the shortcuts, so it takes a bit of time to retrain your muscle memory.
But here’s the real kicker — it’s not the devices, it’s the ecosystem.
Individually, each product is solid. Together, they’re something else entirely. Everything just flows. Messages, photos, notes — they’re just there, everywhere, all the time. I don’t think about syncing anymore, it just happens.
AirDrop, Handoff, universal clipboard — they sound like small features, but they fundamentally change how you work. You stop emailing things to yourself. You stop plugging devices in. You stop working around your tech.
And that’s the difference.
I didn’t set out to “buy into the Apple ecosystem” — but now I get it. Once you’re in, it’s very hard to go back. Not because you can’t… but because everything else suddenly feels like more effort than it should be.
At the same time, Liz and I were cleaning up and went into our roof storage area. Hidden away at the back was my old Globite black plastic school bag.
